Multiple Intelligences Newsletter, Vol 27, No 1

August 1, 2018

Greetings, MI Fans!

Welcome back! What happened to U.S. schools starting after Labor Day?!?

On the chance that you are looking for an amazing book to read, I highly, highly recommend Educated by Tara Westover. It is a gripping story! Westover recounts being raised by fundamentalist Mormons in Idaho, with no birth certificate, never seeing a doctor, and not attending school until age 18. Her journey is fascinating and frustrating, and she winds up earning a PhD. No surprise, Westover uses various intelligences to learn and survive, even though she wasn’t attending a formal school. I was up late because I couldn’t put the book down, and found it quite inspiring. If you read it, I would like to hear your reactions.

Speaking of intelligence, ahem, my lack of Logical-Mathematical intelligence was shown two issues ago when I commended New City 6th grader Eli for memorizing 425 consecutive digits of Pi and winning the New City School Pi Contest. I was accurate in recounting his amazing feat of 425 (he’s again pictured here). However, I gave the wrong date for Pi Day. Yes, Pi Day is March 14 (3.14). So hats off to Eli again with the correct date noted, and get your act together, Tom!

I am pleased to note that this issue of Intelligence Connections marks the beginning of its 27th year of publication. That speaks to the power of MI! Educational trends and thrusts come and go, but the resiliency of MI speaks to the fact that it can be a powerful tool in student learning.

What’s happening in your camp? I’d love to hear from you!
